Protecting Children's Rights
Tostan's holistic program has produced community efforts to protect children's rights, leading to positive results. Perhaps the most significant community-led result has been the protection of thousands of young girls' human rights to health, bodily integrity, and freedom of choice through the abandonment of female genital cutting and child/forced marriage.
Other achievements made by our communities in the realm of children's rights have been:
-
safer, cleaner, and healthier living conditions for talibé children (Koranic students) through efforts by Tostan, Muslim religious teachers, and community associations;
-
increased enrollment of girls in primary schools in the villages that have completed the Tostan CEP program;
-
improved infant and child health and nutrition;
-
increased birth registrations;
-
increased leadership and community decision-making roles for adolescents after participating in the adolescent program;
-
improvement in the conditions and educational experience in Koranic schools, fulfilling the talibés' human right to education. Click here for more information regarding Tostan's Child Protection Project.
