Molly Melching, Executive Director
Molly Melching is the founder and executive director of Tostan. Melching has spent the last thirty years in Africa developing educational materials for use at the village level. She has created two original basic education programs for women and adolescent girls in the national African languages of Senegal and Guinea. She has been honored by many organizations for her expertise in nonformal education, human rights training, and social transformation. She was the recipient of the Humanitarian Alumni Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999 and the Sargent Shriver Distinguished Award for Humanitarian Service in 2002. Malick Diagne, Deputy Executive Director
Malick Diagne received his B.A. from the University of Dakar and his M.A. in International Studies with a concentration in Finance from Ohio University. Born in Senegal, Diagne spent over 20 years working in the nonprofit sector in the United States. He presently serves as Tostan’s Deputy Executive Director. Since 1999, Diagne has reinforced the organizational structure of Tostan through a systematic process of decentralization, delegation, and empowerment. He has strengthened Tostan staff capacities in information technology, built up internal controls, and computerized the accounting system. Diagne has participated in numerous international seminars to present the Tostan program and philosophy. He is fluent in French, English, and Wolof.
