Tostan - Get Involved

Position Title: Grants Assistant
Type: Intern
Location: Washington, DC, USA
Description:

Each year, Africans who participate in Tostan’s Community Empowerment Program (CEP) catalyze social transformation and spearhead grassroots development efforts in their communities. The Grants Assistant has the important job of helping the Fundraising Team to work with international donor agencies to garner support for Tostan. This goal will be achieved mainly through the researching of funding opportunities and the writing of grant applications, proposals, and project reports. 

Start Date: Summer 2011
Commitment:  minimum: 10 working weeks, longer commitment preferred
Location: Washington, DC
Hours per week: Full-time (35 hours / week)
Direct Supervisor: Director of External Affairs
Collaborators: Fundraising Assistant, Accountant, Strategic Grants Manger, other interns and international staff
 

Responsibilities
Please note that depending on the extent and the period of the commitment some of the responsibilities might vary.
  • Write and edit letters of interest, concept notes, proposals, reports,  etc.
  • Assist the Director of External Affairs in developing and consolidating the grant routing system
  • Maintain grants and concepts database
  • Manage grant contracts and other project documents
  • Manage donation and grant records; maintaining, updating, organizing, and locating them when necessary
  • Assist with the update and maintenance of the Fundraising site; including helping to identify, research, catalogue, prioritize, and share all potential grant sources (government, foundation, private, etc.) both in the U.S. and internationally
  • Research potential partners, services, and/or other areas of best practices that might contribute to strategic plan outputs
  • Track Tostan’s online presence and update information when necessary
  • Manage the fundraising team's calendar of grant/application-related dates
  • Regularly update the Director of External Affairs on key contacts and grants
  • Organize and moderate fundraising team conference calls
  • Lead discussions on concept paper development
  • Collaborate with Dakar fundraising team on grant proposals and to plan fundraising initiatives
  • Assist DC team with various other research and writing-related tasks when necessary

  • Reports from work group meetings; periodic status reports to Executive Team
  • Updates to operational plans 
  • Other documents as requested by the Director of Development, Senior Operations Manager, donors, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree; studies in International Development, Education, Gender Studies, another social sciences, Business, Management, or related field preferred
  • Experience working with a non-profit or previous grant writing experience preferred
  • Thorough understanding of Tostan’s programs and methodologies
  • Strong written and spoken proficiency in English required (writing sample required); proficiency in French a plus 
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required; experience with
  • Access or other database software preferred
  • Knowledge of Gmail, Google Groups, Google Documents, Google Calendars, and other Internet programs
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Ability to be persistent and diplomatic, and to establish mutual respect among Tostan staff and project partners
  • Ability to define and meet organizational needs with minimum supervision or oversight, and to manage multiple tasks at once
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to a multicultural environment, to work in varied conditions, to be considerate of limited resources, and to adapt work priorities to the immediate needs of the project or donor
