Every year, Africans who participate in Tostan’s Community Empowerment Program (CEP) catalyze social transformation and spearhead grassroots development efforts in their communities.
The Human Resources and Operations (HR/O) Assistant has the important job of helping Tostan to connect invaluable interns and volunteers with appropriate opportunities and project work. The HRO assistant will work with the Senior Operations Manager to streamline the Internship Program application process, outreach, recruiting, and external and internal issues related to Tostan's Internship Program. Additionally, the HRO assistant serves as a resource for the Senior Operations Manager and will be responsible for many HR and Operations projects.
Start Date: November 2010
Minimum commitment: 10 weeks
Location: Washington, DC
Hours per week: Full-time (35 hours/week)

Collaborator(s): Director of External Affairs, Africa Volunteer Program Coordinator, Assistant to the Africa Volunteer Program Coordinator, other Interns, etc.
Responsibilities
Please note that depending on the extent and the period of the commitment some of the responsibilities might vary.

Manage all incoming applications for the Washington DC internship program

Organize, prepare for, and participate in the interview process

Assist Senior Operations Manager with operations-related tasks

Assist with the creation of internship program materials, program brochures, website updates, etc.
- Help to maintain Tostan’s relationships with past and present interns and volunteers, including composing email updates, coordinating local events, etc.
- Manage Tostan’s online recruiting presence
- Conduct research in support of Tostan’s Volunteer and Internship Programs, including outreach, recruiting opportunities, and professional development opportunities for Tostan staff and interns in the DC area
- Help coordinate Tostan’s Internship Program Exchange with other organizations in the DC area
- Coordinate the efforts of the international team responsible for recruiting and managing the Volunteer and Internship Programs
- Assist the Senior Operations Manager during the orientation week by preparing supporting folders, and other documents, and by providing training and support to new interns
- Maintain a up-to-data database of alumni to use in collaboration with the International Communications Department
- Research funding opportunities for the two programs
- Manage online resources for the two programs
- Assist in developing partnership with universities and colleges in the DC area and elsewhere

Work with Senior Operations Manager and Director of External Affairs to identify current and upcoming office needs and deadlines
- Various administrative tasks
Qualifications
- Thorough understanding of Tostan’s programs and methodologies
- Bachelors degree or current enrollment in Bachelors program; studies in International Development, Education, Gender Studies, other social science, Communications, Business, Management, Finance, or related field
- Strong communication skills, including written and spoken proficiency in English (required) and French (preferred)
- Previous experience with either a nongovernmental or nonprofit organization or experience in Africa/non-western country preferred
- Project management experience preferred
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite required
- Knowledge of Gmail, Google Groups, Google Documents, Google Calendars, and other Internet programs preferred
- Ability to work independently, to self-motivate, and to manage multiple tasks at once
- Flexibility adapting to a multicultural environment, to be considerate of limited resources, and to adapt work priorities to the immediate needs of supervisor, Tostan, or project partners
- Must be willing to provide administrative support when necessary
