Position Posted: 6/26/2008
Position Title: Senegal: Project Management Intern
Position Description:
The Project Management Intern is responsible for assisting with the implementation of the project in all aspects, including planning, management, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting.

In Senegal, as in many areas around the world, adolescent girls find themselves trapped by cultural and social norms that limit their personal development and restrict their participation in society. According to recent UN agency estimates for Senegal, less than half of girls complete primary school; less than half of all women are literate; child marriage is as high as 55%; and nearly one-third of girls go through childbirth before age 19. Often, these numbers are even higher in rural areas.

Collaborating with a major US Foundation on a project entitled "Empowering Communities to Empower Girls," Tostan will be implementing its 30-month Community Empowerment Program (CEP) in 55 communities in the region of Kaolack, Sénégal, starting in September 2008. In addition to the standard CEP modules on Democracy, Human Rights and Responsibilities, Problem Solving, Hygiene, Health, Literacy, Numeracy, and Management, and other parallel development activities such as the creation of Community Management Committees (CMCs) in each community, the communities and the region of Kaolack as a whole will also benefit from specific gender-related activities. These activities include: formal school gender trainings, exchanges between Tostan participants and formal school students (implicating boys in the discussion and change process), school and community exchanges with successful local women role models, social mobilization activities that include participatory film projects, and a review of Tostan's gender modules and gender equality within the organization.
